Soft Dinner Rolls

Preparation Time 3 hours

Cook time 22 minutes

Yields 14-16 rolls

Ingredients

1 cup milk- warmed to 43c

2 1/4 teaspoon instant yeast

1 tablespoons sugar- divided

1 egg

1/4 cup unsalted butter- soft

1 teaspoon salt

3 cups / 390g flour

Optional

2 tablespoons butter- melted

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: whisk the milk, yeast and sugar in a bowl. Cover and let it sit for 10 minutes.

  2. Add the egg, butter, salt and 1 cup flour. Mix on a low speed with a dough hook. Add the remaining flour. Beat it on a medium speed for around 5-6 minutes until a dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. If the dough is too wet, add more flour 1 tablespoon at a time.

  3. Knead the dough for 3-4 minutes more by hand or in the mixer.

  4. Grease a large bowl. Place the dough in the greased bowl. Cover the dough in the oil and let it rise in a warm place for 2 hours or until doubled in size.

  5. Grease a 9x13 inch pan/ pyrex dish with oil/butter. Punch the air out of the dough and divide the dough into 14-16 balls.

  6. Place them in the pyrex dish and cover the dish with a tea towel. Allow them to rise for a second time for an hour until puffy.

  7. Preheat the oven to 180c. Bake the dinner rolls for 20-22 minutes until golden. Make sure you rotate the pan halfway through ensure even baking.

  8. Remove the rolls from the oven and brush over the butter. Cover with a tea towel again and set aside for 10 minutes before serving.
